WELCOME to the 33rd PILBARA MUSIC FESTIVAL being held in Port Hedland at the Civic Centre. Music and the arts are an important part of the life of our town.

The festival aims to promote participation in and enjoyment of music in Port Hedland and the Pilbara; to promote public and business support for music and to encourage and reward excellence.

Entrants from further a-field are most welcome and this year we have several.

This year the programme begins on Wednesday and runs through to Saturday with the Finale Concert taking place on Sunday afternoon. All sessions, including the Finale Concert, will be held in the Gratwick Hall at the Port Hedland Civic Centre.

ADJUDICATION

‘The Pilbara Music Festival is not a competition’

The Pilbara Music Festival has developed a rigorous and rewarding adjudication and award process. Our professional adjudicator will endeavour to critique each performance on its merit. The adjudicator will seek to offer each performer feedback on the musicality of the performance. The adjudicator will award Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good and Participation certificates during the Festival. The adjudicator, with the assistance of the accompanist, will also decide which performers will receive the Perpetual Trophies, the Gold, Silver and Encouragement Awards.

ACCOMPANIST

HELEN PRIESTNER EDMONDS

(LMus DSCM MIMT)

Helen Priestner Edmonds began piano lessons when she was eight and started practicing shortly after being urged to do so! She has developed dexterous fingers for keyboard, making light pastry and gum-leaf whistles.

Observing the accompanist Phyllis Blott broadcasting from the Perth ABC studio was a source of inspiration to Helen to develop as an accompanist. At eighteen, as a student of Gertrude Carey she was awarded an AMEB three year scholarship to Sydney Conservatorium where her teacher was Alexander Sverjensky.

In Perth, Helen trained as a secondary music school specialist including music education lectures with Sir Frank Callaway at UWA, and taught in Perth, England and New South Wales.

Helen continues as a piano teacher and accompanist who enjoys the challenge of working up music for concert performance with music theatre, singers and instrumental ensembles. Helen was our official accompanist in 2007 and she has again accepted our invitation. We welcome Helen once again and know she will have a wonderful time with us.
